5 Ways To Simplify Your Life

Imagine you’ve woken up in the morning and you’ve got a long day ahead of you, it could be a workday or a school day or even a day at university. Imagine that as soon as you’ve left your bed (after hitting that snooze button about a billion times) the first thought that comes to mind is what should I have for breakfast?, Then comes what should I have for lunch, something home-made or store-bought? Maybe I could convince a friend to eat out with me? Not long after you’ll be staring at your wardrobe in dismay, wondering, what should I wear today?

Imagine having to make a billion decisions before you’ve properly woken up for the day, let alone left your home to carry out another bunch of errands. You’ll be overwhelmed if not exhausted and your brain won’t be too happy either. This is decision fatigue. And yes, it’s a real phenomenon that’s known to have effects on the decisions you make and the outcomes.

Decision-fatigue prevents you from being the most efficient at making those all-important decisions later on in the day, because you’ve used up the energy to decide what to eat or what to wear. That’s not to say decision-fatigue doesn’t wear out, once you’ve had your lunch in the middle of the day and your brain has a more abundant supply of glucose, your ability to make decisions becomes better. But, of course, then there’s the afternoon slump.

So what can you do to beat the decision fatigue and save that energy for the more important decisions?

One good way is to simplify your life, this sounds like an extreme case of me pushing minimalism onto you, but I promise it’s just about planning in advance and sticking to a routine, having actionable steps that lead towards a practical goal is what will make all the difference.

5 Practical Ways To Simplify Your Life:

Plan your outfits in advance – if you work in an office and wear work attire then have a selection of outfits that are compliant, easy to put together in the morning, and look effortless. If you’re a student with a particular style then buy those essential pieces and mix and match however you can, it’s all about using less time whilst still looking good.

Meal prep/stick to particular food groups – if you have extra time on the weekends, plan your meals in advance, you can do this for all 3 meals, bonus points if you make your own lunch because you’ll be saving a huge amount of money in the long run. Or have a standard meal that you stick to for breakfast and for lunch, I stick to having toast because I know I can combine it with other foods and it’s filling, and for lunch, I take a sandwich with at least 2 fruits and 2 other snacks.

Have a list, either physical or mental, of what items go in your bag – we’ve all been in that scenario where we’re running out of time, rushing out the door and we’ve forgotten the most important thing at home. It’s frustrating. The best way to combat this is to have a checklist of all the items that you need always, like a portable charger, USB cable, a planner, a pencil case, a notebook etc, and ensure they never leave your bag. If they do, remember to put them back and if you ever run out of items add them to your weekly grocery list as soon as possible.

Unsubscribe from email subscriptions – if you absolutely love what you’re reading from those emails then it can be kept, but if you’ve got a pile of unread emails from companies that you don’t even remember subscribing to, or why you did in the first place, then it’s time to declutter, delete and move on.

Focus on just 3 important tasks every day – instead of overwhelming yourself with 10 things to get done in a day, spread them through the week so you’re only doing the most important tasks for that particular day, not only is this realistic & achievable, but it’s less stressful too.

These are my top 5 ways of simplifying your life that have honestly worked well for me, it’s gotten to a point where I’m spending less time getting ready and more time getting through my to-do list and accomplishing my goals for the day. Have you tried simplifying your life? Why/why not?

  1. I’m starting to simplify my life as best as I can and it’s suuuuuch a big difference every morning! I love meal prepping on the weekends and just being able to grab my lunch on the way out and not worry about finding lunch when noon rolls around.

Also, amen on unsubscribing to email subscriptions! I’ve noticed how quiet my email is throughout the day and absolutely loveeee it. I know when I get an email, it’s something I want to read and follow up on.
