Clarifying your Mindset & Intentions #SERIES

Welcome to Part 2 of the Getting your Life Back on Track #SERIES. Your mindset and intentions, despite being two very different things interlink quite well with each other. If you don’t have the right mindset but have solid intentions with detailed planning on everything you have ever wanted to achieve, you’ll get nowhere. And if you have the right mindset but without the intention to want to succeed, again you’ll get nowhere, you’ll be stuck in the same, old routines living out a life you don’t enjoy living, a life that doesn’t bring you anything fulfilment. Once you have mastered both, that’s when you can truly start living. 


Control your mindset

Have faith in yourself  – this I know is both incredibly cliché and difficult to achieve, what does it actually mean to believe in yourself? It means to identify your strengths and weaknesses, to know what it is that makes you, you, and to use that knowledge in a way that’s beneficial to yourself. If you don’t truly believe in your dreams and ambitions, then you’ll never be capable of achieving them.

Your life, your responsibility – the life that you are currently living, no matter what kind of situation you’re in is as a result of the choices that you’ve made, and these choices you’ve made, including the ones that you will be making, are 100% your responsibility. Knowing this can make you feel powerful yet powerless at the same time, there’s no one bugging you to do certain things, there’s only you, and you have to do whatever it takes to achieve your goals. But remember, despite the many things in life that cannot be controlled, you can choose how to respond. 

Growth mindset vs. Fixed mindset – to fulfil the dreams that you want to fulfil you have to adopt a growth mindset, you have to believe that change is possible, that growth is possible, that despite everything you will evolve. Believing is just as important as doing, it’ll always be part of the equation of success.

Think positively – this journey that you’re on right now, the one that’s bringing you closer and closer to your goals is important and the perspective that you take will determine the outcome. Thinking positively rather than seeing it all as a struggle and becoming discouraged can push you further towards where you want to be, and focusing on what you’ve already accomplished and appreciating it for what it is can help bring more of it into your life.

Clarifying your intentions

Knowing what you want – many people in life, including myself, have gone through phases where we have no clue what we want out of life or where it’s taking us. We move at the will of time when things happen we respond, but when nothing happens we sit and wish we knew where we were going. Essentially we feel out-of-place and without a sense of control. But knowing what you want isn’t easy either, it takes a combination of knowing your strengths, your skill set, your passions, envisioning what kind of life you’d like to live and how exactly you can go about doing this.

A potential route – one of the exercises I like doing is asking myself where do I want to be in three years from now? What sort of life am I envisioning? Once I’ve imagined all the things I’d like to achieve from the grand scale of things right down to simple habits in my daily life, I write. I pour it all out onto paper and start organising it into goals, sub-goals and habits.

Uncertainty – if, despite everything you’re still unsure of where you want to be, what you’d want to be doing, follow your curiosity. What it is about life that intrigues you? What do you want to find out about? Keep track of these changes year by year, is there anything that stands out to you? If not, keep going, as they say, the world is your oyster.
