Hello everyone, and welcome to the start of my goal-setting, action-planning and overall inspirational posts leading into the new year. I find it incredibly hard to believe another year has flown by, so cliché but it’s true!! And that we’ve been given this opportunity to reset our lives and overall make things better in 2018.

The start of a brand new year has this certain vibe to it, you find yourself somehow getting motivated and all of a sudden planning an almost ridiculous amount of goals, that you hope you’ll stick to and that you hope will enable you to become a better person. Fast-forward a few months and you’ll find people still making these changes absolutely stuck into achieving their goals, and on the other hand, you’ll also find people who’ve given up, they’ll say the spark they felt has gone.

The difference that sets these two types of individuals apart is not based on ability, they both have the potential and capabilities to succeed in achieving their goals, but instead lies in the way they approach goal-setting, and one of the keys to success is to start planning beforehand. Not only does this get you ahead, but if you plan thoroughly enough you will have an action plan that sets you apart from the rest.

To get you ahead, here’s a list of 5 potential things you could do before the new year, that will set you in the best possible position to start 2018 with a fresh, new and clutter-free mindset:

Reflect: there’s a saying that goes, in life no matter how many people you surround yourself with, at then of the day it’ll just be you and in life, you’ll always have yourself. As a result, the idea of spending time with yourself and getting to know yourself a little bit better is pretty much invaluable. In particular, reflecting on the past year and re-evaluating your actions towards people, situations and overall behaviour. Though this is much easier said than done, as to reflect you don’t just pick on the positive aspects of yourself but also your flaws and to come to terms with being human, not being perfect but recognising that there are ways to self-improvement.

Forgive: this is incredibly important because when we forgive, we let go of the toxic poison that’s inside us, it might be easy to just forget, but at some point, those feelings and thoughts will resurface. Forgiveness doesn’t mean that you let the other person have control over you, but you free yourself you let go of the negativity, the bitterness and the uncomfortable feeling that you may have.

Plan: I don’t mean planning every single day of next year from January to December, but to think about the little accomplishments that you want to have in the coming year. To start off with you think about monthly accomplishments such as, meeting up with a friend once a month, treating yourself once every two months, just by thinking of monthly goals you get an idea of how the year will pan out.

Set Goals: personally when I don’t have a good set of goals, I feel like I’m wandering around aimlessly through life without a certain purpose, having these goals gives my life a certain meaning as well as the inspiration to know I can change my life and better myself, regardless of the circumstances I’m currently going through.

And finally, Declutter: the amount of clutter that surrounds me in my day-to-day life has a negative impact on the way my life, my day and my general mood goes. The more clutter there is, the more cluttered my mind gets and the more I feel overwhelmed and anxious about the things I have to get done. And the last thing you want to have when going into the new year is this stress and negativity weighing you down, even if you just declutter one room a day, it will have incredible benefits. And in the grand scheme of things, the less stuff you accumulate, the less time you’ll spend cleaning everything.

These 5 tips are just a starting point when it comes to taking steps to improve your life, there’s so much more and depending on how things go I’ll happily make a part 2 to this. But for now, it’s time to start cleaning!!
