The Life-Changing Impact of Gratitude

Despite what many people in our society think, having a sense of gratitude is a simple yet powerful tool you can use to change your perspective in everyday life. Now I understand how that sounds, like some sort of magical potion you take in an instant and everything’s gotten better again, but I promise you I’m not being sponsored by anyone to write about this.

One of the first things to take note of is that we, as humans, as I mentioned in my last post on pursuing perfectionism, are inclined to chase success, we will always seek more than what we have, usually to improve our efficiency and productivity. Once we’ve reached a particular goal or mastered a certain skill, we’re quick to move on to something new and inspiring. Although there is nothing wrong with having a broad set of interests and skill sets, without the feeling of gratitude of what we currently have, our efforts will never be enough. We will never be truly satisfied with our lives, which can be damaging to ourselves and lead to unhappiness.

In order to practice gratitude, we have to learn to understand the importance of having what we already have. Be grateful, be present and appreciate the current moment, even if certain things seem to in a difficult situation, think about the things you’re grateful to have, whether it’s a roof over your head, supportive family and friends, access to clean water and food, access to education and the privilege to learn and more.

The more aspects of your life that you reflect on, the more things you’ll find that you can be grateful for, and the more you’ll appreciate the little things in life. The change in perspective I mentioned takes you away from the unhappiness in the unpredictable nature of the future to the current moment of appreciation, happiness and ease.
