The quote ‘be the reason someone smiles today’ means a lot to me; the fact that we as individuals have the ability to make, or even break someone else’s day is a powerful thing. That in itself, is one of life’s most persistent and urgent questions, what are you doing for others? Yet, it’s not just the effect we have on others that’s important but the effect we can have on ourselves.
It’s the sudden realisation that the world doesn’t just revolve around you, there are millions, if not billions of people in the world who need your help. Throughout your life, you’ll meet a handful of these people, and the bottom line is that they will change you. Life works in the most mysterious ways, yet everything that does happen, happens for a reason. Sometimes there’s multiple reasons, multiple interpretations and sometimes there’s just one reason, staring at you with its eyes wide open begging to be acknowledged.
Yesterday I buying drinks and snacks at a store and unfortunately I couldn’t find half the items I was looking for; so I payed for I had and went to next shop. After roaming for a while I still couldn’t find what I was looking for. All of a sudden, a girl my age walked up to me and told me she had a problem. The heel of her boot broke off and she was having difficulty walking, she asked whether I could go to a store and buy her a new pair of shoes. I said yes, of course but on one condition, if she came with me. So we left the shop and walked with her hand clutching my arm, at this moment I realised she trusted that I wouldn’t let go. We introduced ourselves and laughed at our own silly mistakes; she mentioned that she’s usually put together. I distinctly remember telling her life is unpredictable, some aspects of our life we cannot control and we accept that whatever happens, only happens because it is meant to.
After this incident it hit me that I was meant to meet her, to help her but ultimately to help myself realise how doing good can change you. It opens your eyes to the idea that helping others is not just a responsibility of life that we as individuals have but it’s what gives life meaning.
Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness. Always strive to be that human being because sometimes it’s the little things that occupy the biggest part of their hearts.
